Once the full perimeter is tack welded, grind all the welds down. There are three important things here: always go along the length of the weld, not side to side as that thins the sheetmetal on both sides of the weld; use a new cutting disc as it cuts quicker and builds up less panel-warping heat—if the weld turns blue when you grind, you’re building up too much heat; finally, use an “easy grind” alloy MIG wire. It’s more expensive than common mild-steel wire, but the difference is night and day when grinding. It cuts much quicker, generates much less heat, and makes grinding disc last longer.
