After the doodad was cooled off a bit I inserted the stub into the floor jack as shown. Since the stub of bar stock was an 1/8-inch smaller in diameter than the hole in the jack it wasn’t as stable as I’d like—but it worked well enough. Afterwards I did fab a disc (sort of a giant flat washer) that I slid over the stub and welded. The washer rests on the jack face and steadies the doodad perfectly.
