Calibrating The Pump
Hesitation and stumbling may not be a metering issue; it may be as simple as an accelerator pump adjustment. Moving the accelerator pump link closer to the carburetor body will increase the stroke of the pump and deliver more fuel.
Changing the position of the link in the actuating lever makes adjustments to the accelerator pump. The closer the lever is to the carb body, the larger the "squirt" will be. | An often overlooked carburetor adjustment is the electric choke. Loosening the screws and rotating the housing will determine when the choke opens completely. The screwdriver points to index marks that serve as reference points. | |
Care And Feeding
Classic truck owners take pride in their rides, so caring for a carburetor should be easy enough. Depending on the type of air filter used, clean or change it regularly; the same goes for the fuel filter. If you take your truck off the road for the winter, use an approved fuel stabilizer to keep deposits from gumming up the works, and before you tear into a carburetor, make sure all the other performance aspects of the engine are up to par. Finally, if carburetor repair or calibration is in order, buy some cleaner, the necessary kit, and have at it.
