Once the bit is set, remove it from the alignment port and tighten the chuck completely. Before turning the machine on, set the sharpening port accordingly. For certain split-point procedures,... | ...align the bit at one degree but sharpen it at the other; for everything else, stick with the same setting. | Insert the chuck into the sharpening bit as indicated with the guides lined up and rotate the chuck back and forth against the cam stops (half-turn) in a smooth motion-let the grinding wheel do the sharpening. |
This was actually my first attempt at creating a split-point-whether beginner's luck or not, it turned out exactly as it should. | If you're splitting or resplitting, remember to not remove the bit from the chuck after sharpening. Remove the grit tube from the splitting port (rear of machine) and insert the chuck.... | ...Make sure the sharpening guide (white mark) lines up with the splitting guide (groove on port). With the power on, push the chuck in slowly until it stops. |
The manual will tell you how many rotations different-size bits require, but a good sign your bit is getting sharper is a decrease in noise from the grinding wheel. If the chisel, heel, and cutting edges aren't uniform or the relief angle is too high, realign your bit and sharpen again. This bit's good to go-or ready to be split. | You can tell whether or not a split-point was cut correctly by looking down directly at the point. The split line between cutting edges should be very close to straight across, creating a centering point. | Both of the Drill Doctor models allow you to adjust chisel and relief angles depending on how you want your bit to perform. A more aggressive bit will require an increased relief; lesser chisel and relief produce better-drilled holes. Adjustment is set when you initially align a bit. |
