1968 Ford F100 - The Bumpside Build-Off

Part 11: Raise It, Don't Raze It! Elevate Your Bed Floor
By Grant Peterson

Way back when I installed Fatman Fabrications' four-link, I also step-notched the frame 6 inches to ensure suspension clearance for my low ride height. I had originally planned on ditching the stock bed floor and cutting the floor around the step notch to set the bed back on the frame during the build until I addressed the bed floor. With the frame sticking up into the bed floor, it was easy to measure that the floor needed to be raised 5 inches in order to clear the step notch.

Since the bed floor was going to come straight up all in one piece, I made horizontal marks around all the inner walls of the bed 5 inches above the floor for reference as well as a guide for later on.

After trying to think of a strong, easy-to-make, decent-looking spacer to raise the floor up the needed 5 inches, I found some 2x5-inch/.120-wall steel tubing that would work just fine. After laying out a smooth, symmetrical, tapered shape from 6 inches at the widest to 2 inches at the bottom, I cut the pieces out in a bandsaw.
