After rotating and meshing the ring-and-pinion a few times, Brett visually checks the pinion depth setup and sees that it's close. He wants to reduce the pinion shim thickness by only about 0.001-inch, which would pull the pinion away from the center of the ring gear and move the "wipe" of the gears to the middle of the teeth on the ring gear, where it should be.

With a magnetic base dial indicator, Brett checks the backlash or gap in the gears and finds that it's 0.010-inch, which is acceptable, but reducing the pinion shims would close this up a little and be just about right.

Well, everything was disassembled to adjust the pinion shims, and taking the pinion bearing off is easier said than done since it was pressed on to begin with. If you plan on doing lots of differential work, you could pony up and buy this ultra-handy bearing puller, but they're not cheap. Or you can have the pros like Unitrax do it for you.
