Boy howdy! How many of these big guys have you seen in old towns across the country just rotting away? That's exactly what this '53 Ford F-500 ex-dump truck was doing until Mike Crimaldi bought the beast and hauled it to The Roadster Shop in Elgin, Illinois, for above and beyond the full treatment.

Just opening the Ford's sunburnt door unleashes a plethora of rust. This is the tricky stuff, too, the kind that not only gets through the floor, but almost everywhere inside, out, and in between as well.

This was all they used from the hulk of the truck-just the doors and cab; kind of humbling, huh? Anyway, it was off to get chemically stripped, which would reveal just how bad the body rot was.

Never mind the frame for a minute, how about all that serious equipment around it! The guys at The Roadster Shop aren't messing around. Chris Patzer whipped up the 'rails for the '53 that he back-welded the inside seams in before welding in the boxing plate. He fabricated them from four major pieces since they didn't start with stamped 'rails.

After Chris was finished, Doug Leetzow stepped in and set the chassis up by installing crossmembers, motor mounts, body mounts, and suspension components.

The Roadster Shop builds a tubular dual-level center crossmember that adds plenty of beef to the chassis since it ties so much of the frame together.

The dummy big-block, Tremec five-speed from Keisler, and Heidt's IFS are mocked up into place before the final mounts are made and everything is welded to the frame.
