The foundation for the Motown engines is World Products' four-bolt-main Motown block. Cast by World in high-density iron, the block has a lot of advantages over a GM piece, including 1-inch thicker front and rear bulkheads, standard 4.00-, 4.125-, or 4.200-inch bores, indexed lifter bores, and solid pan rails. The camshaft location is unchanged from a standard small-block Chevy.

A closer look at the block reveals more pronounced cylinder wall "bulges," which accommodate the extra metal cast into the block. When bored to 4.200 inches for the 443, the walls are still .250-inches thick--meaning there's plenty of material left to machine. In fact, the limiting factor is the fact that the biggest Fel-Pro head gasket comes with a 4.200-inch bore. The extra metal contains larger water jackets, too, though the head bolts still go in "blind"--that is, they don't go into the water at all.

Crankshafts are forged-steel pieces that are internally balanced and have a 4.000-inch (443 and 427) or 3.875-inch (415) stroke. They come from either Scat or Eagle, depending on what's available at the time. They're both of equal quality and can put up with much more power than what's being made here.

Motown crate engines run Wiseco, JE, or SRP pistons in various bore sizes depending on the displacement. This JE 20cc reverse-dome piston is for the 443 and has a Speed-Pro ring package. Compression ratios vary depending on engine and head material, but all remain in the 9:1 to 10:1 range to make them pump-gas friendly. The connecting rod is a Manley H-beam example with ARP bolts. "We went with the more expensive, drag racing rod on all the engines," Mitchell says, "as we can get it cheaper in volume and pass on the savings."

When you get a Motown crate engine, you're buying something built with racing-level precision. "We still assemble every block with the main caps torqued and dial bore-check each engine," Mitchell says. "I'm certain that no one else is doing that."

See that carefully machined notch for stroker clearance on the rod bolt? The block comes that way in stock form! The four-bolt main caps are nodular iron--wait, don't you need billet splayed caps? Not at this power level (World will still sell them to you--everyone asks...), but maybe with a blown engine or 800 hp on up.

Head design is critical for making big power, and Motown 220 heads (named for the 220cc intake runners) set these engines apart from the pack.

The heads are cast with more metal and more water capacity, and feature bean-shaped "fast burn" combustion chambers. Manley valves are employed exclusively (2.125-inch intake and 1.60-inch exhaust on the 443, and a 2.080/1.60-inch combo on the 415).

All of the hydraulic lifter engines get a Crane camshaft that delivers a streetable--though pleasantly lumpy--idle that's just right for cruise nights.

Roller camshafts are available on the more serious Motown engines. Since the Motown block retains a stock camshaft position (instead of raising it), an off-the-shelf Manley true-roller double timing chain is employed.

You'll find no cheap parts on the tops of these engines. Aluminum roller rockers like these Harland-Sharp items are standard fare, as are Manley pushrods and springs.

Fuel delivery for the 415 typically comes from a modified 870cfm Holley four-barrel (shown) on a Sportsman II intake, but World has also been playing around with Holley's Commander 950-based EFI (Motown EFI intakes are in the works). For the 443 you can choose between EFI and an 1,150cfm Hardcore Dominator.

Finished off with an HEI distributor and Accel plugs, Motowns need little more than a flexplate, water pump and oil to be ready to run. Besides the awesome power and first-rate parts and assembly, we like the fact that Motowns like this 415 don't look or act like race engines--they just perform like them. We'd love to dress one up like a stock 350 and then terrorize the locals. They'd never know what hit 'em!
