The truck is in really good shape, but there are a few spots on the doors that have surface rust and I'm wondering how to go about prepping those so it won't spread while covered? I tried using really fine sanding paper to start by hand, but the paint job is so dang thick, it didnt' really help. Would it be ok for me to use a hand sander to get is down to bare metal and smooth before I use some Rustoleum primer? If so, what grit paper should I use? I remember years ago there were these things that you could twist into the coil springs and it would do the trick. Are they still available or is there a better way to do this? Would it be reasonable to put air shocks on the front? I don't want to put the air bags on it that I see in all the magazines. I have an old Datsun Jeep with the original engine and running gear. It has a 3.9 straight six. I've been slowly working through this truck for 4 years or so. I don't have a lot of time but have been plugging away on it. The engine and truck sat for a long time without any attention, the last time it was current with tabs was 1979. Anyway, I've made good progress slowly getting everything straightened out from electrical to engine. I had the head redone, new distro, clean carb, new clutch, tranny overhaul, electronic ignition too, etc, etc. over the weekend I finally got to take it out for a short spin on real roads....quiet, gravel roads far from anyone, anything. Anyway, it starts and runs well. But getting it out on the roadie a different story. It backfires like crazy...mostly out of the exhaust. Its crazy because it will hardly even climb hills it spits so much out the tailpipe. I'm sure most of you will think that it is the timing but it's currently set dead on. It has a vacuum advance that works fine. I even fidgeted around with the timing to see if ANYTHING would change the backfire..... No distro adjustment gets rid or it. This engine has timing gears and I haven't checked them yet. I changed carbs with the same result. I even changed the distro reinstalling the original Hitachi....no change. My dad is elderly but ran a couple service stations and he tried to sort it out. We removed plug wires in order starting at 1 working through to 6. And here is where things got a little weird. If you remove 1 it wants to die and sputters. But if you remove 2-5 no change while idling in the driveway....none. But if you remove 6 it's the same as 1. We actually pulled off 2-5 and sprayed a little starting fluid down the carb and it started and idled fine with only 1 & 6 plugged in.??????? I'm not too concerned about that really maybe 1 & 6 offset each other enough to allow for that scenario. Anyway, my compression is good 110-120 on all six cylinders. New, hotter plugs. I do have spark to all 6 plugs...... I checked the old' fashioned way!!!! I never pulled the oil pan off of it.... Maybe I should have. The engine really wants to run right but doesnt. My dad was really impressed with how nicely it idles. I can't imagine the timing gears getting out of sync but maybe. I know nothing about the history of the truck but like all 4WD trucks they usually get beat to death so maybe something is amiss. Anyway, if you have any ideas please respond I'd love to hear them. 				<a href="http://del.icio.us/post?url=2&url=http://forums.classictrucks.com/70/9513738/tech_talk/need_some_advice_for_a_motor/&title=Need some advice for a motor">Add to del.icio.us</a></div></dt>]]></description><title><![CDATA[Need some advice for a motor]]></title><guid>http://forums.classictrucks.com/70/9513738/tech_talk/need_some_advice_for_a_motor</guid></item><item><link>http://forums.classictrucks.com/70/9513771/tech_talk/need_some_advice_for_a_motor/</link><pubDate>Wed, 29 May 2013 21:05:33 -0700</pubDate><category><![CDATA[Tech Talk]]></category><description><![CDATA[<dt><b>Need some advice for a motor</b><br />can you narrow down the year, make , model.. and what type of engine.. i know that nissan patrols were made.. but a 3.8 liter motor not a 3.9.. take some pictures and upload them to photobucket dot com.. its free... paste the links here.. most six cylinders have a firing order of 1,5,3,6,2,4.. is there a chance you might have something with an odd firing order??? you could actually have the spark plug wires installed going the WRONG DIRECTION.. but without something closer to look up.. i cannot tell.. you could pull the distributer cap off and use the starter to bump the engine around to see which way the rotor turns.. clockwise or counter clockwise.. decades ago. the mechanic in the next bay could not get this monte carlo to start.. yep.. after all three of us worked on it for 10 minutes.. i discovered that he had the firing order going in the wrong direction.. there is also a small chance.. that you are missing a ground wire.. please check... battery negative terminal to the engine block battery negative terminal to the inner fender usually back of the cylinder head to the firewall. inside the distributer.. there is usually a small braided ground wire.. goes from the breaker plate mounting screw to the points mounting screw... sometimes these get left out or tossed.. wrong.. the upper breaker plate is movable.. it needs a good ground connection via a flexible wire to supply enough current to saturate the coil primary windings,.<br /><br /><div><a href="http://forums.classictrucks.com/70/9513771/tech_talk/need_some_advice_for_a_motor/">Need some advice for a motor</a> |

Although it runs strong and uses no oil, I am not certain that it has ever been rebuilt. I do know the previous owner told me that he hadn't rebuilt it and he had it for many, many years. My question is, assuming the valves, seats, etc are original, should I run one of the lead additives in my fuel? Also, will gasoline with 10% ethanol be harmful? Previous owner added the lead additive and also some other type of fuel additive because of the ethanol. Should I continue to do this? I have done several Jeep CJ builds. I want to build a 47 - 58 chev truck with a modern engine that my wife can drive around town and take on short trips. I have a good running 1997 suburban as a donor. I have tons of questions. I haven’t bought the old truck yet but I am looking at several on Craig’s List and e bay. I would prefer a 5 window Chev but I am open to others. I am not good at body work but I am a fair welder/fabricator and mechanic. Sorry for the long introduction. I welcome any suggestions anyone has either here or in private e mail. Should I try to install the vortec and aod in the old truck or put the old truck body on the suburban chassis? If I install the vortec and tranny in the old truck what do I do about the front axle and steering? I do want power steering. I know there is a lot of knowledge and talent on this forum and I hope to learn a little from you. I am restoring a 1955 F100 and need a RH front fender. I am looking to buy a fender from other than the usual places. Can anyone point me to a website or individual that can provide me the best fit? I would rather use US steel. Do the original OEM fender stamps still exist, and if so who's using them? I have looked on LMC, Sacramento Vintage, Bobs, but was told the fenders can vary by manufacturer. I am trying to limit any modifications to new parts. Any thoughts? I almost bought a spare tire bracket from Craigslist, but noticed it was on a long-bed and did not have a strut that goes through the fender (totally mounted in front of the fender). Please confirm that the bracket for the short-bed is different from the long-bed? Is there more than one version of a fender with the hole for the spare tire strut for the '57? The model I need also has two struts that that mount on top of the side rail of the P/U body and a brace that fits between the fender and P/U body for added strength. The brackets are hard to find. Does anyone have one for sale?
