The specialty-equipment industry has long revered the pickup segment for its growth and profit opportunities, but hikes in gasoline prices this year have taken a toll on recent sales.

AutoPacific, an automotive industry consulting firm, predicts that small, or compact, pickups will drop to 503,300 units sold for 2008, a decrease of 8% from 2007. Large pickup sales will endure an even more drastic decline of 20%, according to forecasts, ending 2008 with about 1,700,300 units sold. Overall pickup sales will drop 18% in 2008, according to AutoPacific data.

Still, the compact Ford Ranger and Toyota's Tundra and Tacoma have proven the most resilient among the steep declines, posting only single-digit losses from last year. The table below shows the top 20-selling pickups from January–June of 2008 compared to 2007 sales.

A survey sent to SEMA members earlier this year showed that 70% either manufactured or sold specialty products for large pickups. Though the sales shifts illustrated above are likely to have major impact on SEMA-member companies, the market for used pickups may still hold strong.

Around 57% of enthusiasts who own pickups said that they purchased their vehicle used, according to the Automotive Lifestyle study of automotive enthusiast magazine subscribers administered late last year. SEMA members know that consumers will continue to buy pickups, used and new.

“While it's an indisputable fact that pickup sales have declined drastically in recent months, they have not gone away and will not,” commented Joel Ayres, national marketing director for LEER.

Ayres went on to describe his observation of pickup owners at a recent event at the fairgrounds in Columbia. “Lined up in the parking lot were a dozen fullsize trucks with young men standing around them. Of course this was a beautiful sight to me. They talked to me about the high cost to fill up their trucks, but when I asked about changing vehicles, I got answers from ‘I need it for my work’ to needing the vehicle for pulling a boat or trailer. Some stated that they just plain like their truck."

Looking at those enthusiasts that own pickups, according to the Automotive Lifestyle study, some of the top activities indeed reflect a need for a pickup: 50% said they go camping or hiking; 49% hunting, fishing or shooting; 47% off-roading; and 32% boating or sailing. In addition, the top profession noted by these enthusiasts was “skilled trade,” a line of work that often requires a pickup.

R.L. Polk registration data shows that 12% of all vehicles registered in the United States are, in fact, fullsize pickups. So while new pickup sales are down this year, specialty-equipment companies could still benefit by focusing on current pickup owners.

Edelbrock CEO and President Vic Edelbrock, Jr. awarded Keith Carroll of Longmont, Colorado the 2008 Vic Edelbrock Sr. Northwest Kansas Technical College scholarship.

The scholarship was created in 1996 in memory of Vic Edelbrock Sr., who was born and raised in northwest Kansas before moving west and establishing Edelbrock in a small shop in Los Angeles in 1938. Vic Edelbrock Jr. and granddaughter Courtney Isom chose Keith Carroll as the scholarship winner out of six finalists, based on his scholastic achievement, essay and video interview.

Vic Edelbrock and daughter Christi Edelbrock, Edelbrock VP of Purchasing, presented Keith with a check in the amount of $7,500.00, a signed copy of the book Edelbrock: Made in USA, and an Edelbrock letterman jacket.

Keith is currently enrolled in the Automotive Technology program at Northwest Kansas Technical College where he is making the grade with a 3.389 GPA and an impressive work resume forged of a blue collar work ethic and hands on experience. This scholarship will aid in the costs of tuition, books, fees, clothing and tools as part of the two-year Associates program.

When asked how it feels to earn such an award, Keith stated "I'm thrilled! After I graduate I will get to work in the field and learn as much as I can about mechanical, electrical and fabrication. My goal is to to one day start my own specialty shop where I will focus on off-road trucks and performance vehicles. I want to be well rounded and build the reputation as the go-to guy for anything specialized". Keith's mother, Linda, was also on hand and was excited for and proud of her son.

Vic Edelbrock Jr. stated "Keith is a young man of character and automotive passion. He and young men and women like Keith are the future of our business and this scholarship, in honor of my father, will help cultivate and nurture the love affair of the American automobile for generations to come. Congratulations Keith".

ABOUT EDELBROCK

Founded in 1938, Torrance-based Edelbrock Corp. is recognized as one of the nation's premier designers, manufacturers and distributors of performance replacement parts for the automotive and motorcycle after markets. For many people this won't have much of an effect on their lives except give them something to talk about at the local cruise or around the water cooler. Now that a few weeks have passed the topic of conversation has probably moved onto something else like the nearly $4.00 a gallon prices at the pump, but I want to add my two cents about Boyd if I may.

Back in the late 1970s Boyd breathed life back into hot rods which were all but dead at the time and revolutionized the industry which has given countless people an opportunity to make a living to this day, not necessarily working for him, but just think of all the billet spin-off companies...

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone asked me if he was as big of a jerk in real like as he was on his TV show, American Hot Rod and my answer ever time was "no". I knew Boyd for the better part of 8 years. He gave me a job at his hot rod shop back in 2000 when it was in Anaheim where Robbie Gordon's off-road shop is, back before the TV show, back around the time of the Lead Zypher and the Aluma Truck. I was 20 years old and had sort of been laid off at another hot rod shop that a friend of mine owned due to business slowing down and this is when I got the opportunity to go work for Boyd. Being heavy into traditional hot rods I didn't have much interest in the "Boyd-style", but I was/am always willing to learn to do things better to further my skills regardless of the subject matter and going from working in small shops to standing on a white floor working on $200K plus cars was quite the eye opener! I felt like I was the dirtiest thing in there.

Being in this kind of environment and working on these types of vehicles really did help me to see a whole 'nuther side to building cars/trucks/hot rods/etc and I would do my best to retain everything I learned and really felt like I was soon raising the bar for myself as a fabricator much higher than I had ever imagined and would go back to my shop after work and try and use all this new knowledge on the traditional '29 Model A sedan I was building. Boyd was the one that made me learn to TIG weld. He demanded that I sit down for the first hour of every day and practice, something I'm very grateful for to this day. While I still remain stubborn in my automotive tastes I found out that there is a lot to learn from these high dollar shops and what they build and why (maybe I'll save the intricacies of this for another blog...).

After a year or so at Boyd's my life took me out of state and wound up having to quit, but Boyd personally thanked me for the job I did and said it was open to me should I ever move back which I wound up taking him up on about a year and a half later. I was married (now divorced) at this time and was happy to have the job back, but my then wife and I were having a hard time finding a place to rent (this was at the height of the California real estate boom) and Boyd told us to meet him at the new shop in La Habra, on a Saturday none the less, and he wound up personally driving us around to look for a place for several hours and took us out to lunch. One on one boyd was always a very cool guy, he always asked how things were going and usually had some sort of joke/story for you. So, that afternoon always sticks in my mind when someone asks me about him being a certain way on the TV show, guess it wouldn't have been good for ratings to portray him as he really was, which is too bad because many people to this day have the wrong impression of a Legend in our time whether you are into the cars he built or not.

For not it is only available in Japan and for Hondas but I think they should develop this for all makes and models. Its a black box like they have in aircrafts that record accidents. It records audio and video 12 seconds prior to an accident and 8 seconds after. Its a way to prevent people trying to point the finger in an accident. It all get stored onto a SD memory card that can eaisly be transferred to your computer. (jalopnik.com)

What do you guys think? It was the NHRA drag races finals in Pomona this year. It was a great time but one thing really stood out. Throughout the day during the final eliminations they were bringing cars out from the NHRA museum and lining them up down the outside of the track. At first i didn't know what was going on but I then realized what was going on. They were going to do a tribute to the late Wally Parks. They started pulling cars out from early drag racing days to the most modern cars such as a top fuel dragster and a funny car. They had introduce all these cars and gave a breif history about them as well. When the announcer had finished his introduction of the cars the greatest thing happened. They Fired up all of the cars that they had brought out. It was a great sound, hearing all of the engines roar and them reving it up. It was a great tribute to Wally Parks. Im just glad i was there to see it and be a part of.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r119/Lewdogg13/DSC01185.jpg

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r119/Lewdogg13/DSC01186.jpg

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r119/Lewdogg13/DSC01188.jpg

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r119/Lewdogg13/DSC01189.jpg

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r119/Lewdogg13/DSC01190.jpg

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r119/Lewdogg13/DSC01191.jpg

I really didn't know what to expect except for what a I saw on movies, but we all know what is in the movies is not always the case. I have never been on a subway either up until this trip. I always thought how much of a mess and confusing it had to be to catch the right train or bus and what have you. Much to my suprise that was not the case at all. It was easy to maneuver my way around the subways of New York, and if I did have a question the New Yorkers we glad to help.

While on one of my many subway rides I thought to myself how great it would be if the same system was used here in Southern California. I mean I know Los Angeles already has there little metro system but come on, All of So Cal suffers from horrible traffic. I think some sort of subway system throughout California would be great, of course I don't know how possible it would be but hey.. a guy can dream can't he?

What do you guys think?

Yea, It's Cool.

So not to long ago( well its actually been a few months, but hey who's counting?) I had recieved a box of the new Ice, by Turtle Wax. Turtle Wax is claming that Ice "is the only clear polish that wipes off in one easy step". So to test the theory I decided to go out side and get my hands dirty and wash up my ride. Which in this case happens to be a lifted chevy truck. I washed and dried my truck and it looked pretty good.

Its about time i break out the Ice and see what this stuffs really made of. I decide to try out the liquid polish. It seems pretty easy to use. I put it on, rub it off... all that good stuff and my truck looks great. I actually didnt have my camera handy. I left it at the office unfortunatly. It did come out great though and I definitely recommend this product! So go out there and get your cars clean with Ice bye Turtle Wax!

I t all started Friday night when a few friends of mine talked me into driving out to Arizona to visit for the weekend and go to a concert there. I really didn,t take much convincing now that I think about it but non the less, convince me is what they did. So i went to be early to prepare for the 5 PI hour drive that awaited me the morning that followed. 4:00 AM rolls around and I finally head out on my quest for Arizona. I hope in my little Hyundai Elantra, to save me gas rather than driving a V8 Silverado with mud tires, And head on my merry way. Nothing but me, My car, and my Ipod on the open road. Well I am now about 3 hours into my drive and the sun is starting to come up, Its peaking over the mountain and shining in my eyes. I suddenly see something in the road and swerve to miss what ever it may be and my tires run over some dirt on the shoulder area. I try to correct it and pull it back onto the highway, but I over correct and lose control. My car spins out across the highway and I roll off the side. Not once, twice or three times but four times! I can still hear the sounds around me, I tell ya, that was one heck of a ride. Once I finally stop rolling I realize I landed topside which is a good thing but I see the engine smoking. I unhook my seatbelt and climb out the driver side window. I take one look at the car and realize I shouldn,t have been able to climb out. I check myself for scratches and I find one on my left arm that looks more like a carpet burn. Luckily a couple truck drivers stopped and made sure everything was fine, thank God they did, my cell phone was thrown from the car during one of my acrobatic rolls. Well after all the police reports, insurance claims and towing expenses I finally got to go home and rest. The moral of this story is always wear your seatbelt. I usually am partial to it, I am not one to always put it on, weather I,m a passenger or the driver. I know it,s annoying to hear at time and it gets in the way. But I do have to say, the seatbelt is what saved my life. So buckle up out there and be safe.

Well i have my 2002 Chevy Silverado sitting in the driveway, its been there for a few weeks since gas prices out here are pretty much unbearable. I can't even fill my truck up for under $75. Well anyways im getting off topic... I go out to start my truck and nothing happens... I hear a click and thats about it. I tried this nifty battery charger I have laying around. I try again and still nothing. I came to the conclusion that i need a new battery... This is where it gets interesting. I have never had to replace the battery in a car before so I was in for a treat. I dissconnected everything and took the battery out which didn't seem so hard at all, I loaded up my other car and headed to the local auto parts store. When i set the battery on the counter it started leaking everywhere and it got on my shirt which was not very fun. After an hour of waiting for the guys to find what I needed I finally got started on my way home. Upon my arrival I had to of course greet the family and the dogs(They won't leave me alont otherwise) so i could finally get to business. I started connecting everything in the right order, red to red, black to black and so on and so fourth til' finally it was the moment of truth. I jumped up into the monster and she started up with no problems. I was proud of myself. I had just changed my car battery for the first time with no troubles.
