The Concours d'Elegance is a prestigious event which has showcased many beautiful classic cars such as early Mercedes, Jaguars, Ferraris and one of a kind priceless vehicles for the past 60 years. Only in the last decade has the Pebble Beach show opened a special class for Hot Rods. The esteemed event has had another first in its recent history with SO-CAL Arizona's '53 Push Truck as the first truck to show on the grass and cross winners platform.
With the 2010 Concours d Elegance in the rear view mirror the legendary SO-CAL Belly tanker won the Dean Batchelor Preservation Award. It was pushed over the winners' platform by the SO-CAL-AZ truck. That's the way they did it on the salt flats; the belly tanker didn't have a starter, the push truck was the starter. It was either show or GO, and GO it did, Alex Xydias broke a lot of speed records with that vehicle. No doubt it deserved to win the Dean Batchelor Preservation Award and current owner, Bruce Myers, has been walking on air ever since.
Frank Streff, President of SO-CAL-AZ in Phoenix restored the push truck a few years back and it has been a complimentary vehicle ever since, "We wanted to re-create the SO-CAL Speed Shop '53 Ford truck that Alex Xydias (SO-CAL's founder) used as his push truck at Bonneville, Pomona and many other racing venues." Classic Trucks magazine featured a 4 part build series on the push truck in 2002 and it is still getting long looks.
Streff states, "When we heard that the Belly Tanker was invited to show at the event we were excited for Alex, Bruce and the gang at SO-CAL HQ.; but we were even more thrilled when we got the call to bring out the '53 SO-CAL Push Truck as a support vehicle. Never before had a truck been on the d'Elegance field in this capacity." The crowd went wild at Pebble Beach when this "duet of history" traveled through the show field and crossed in front of the concours judge's tables. The announcer exclaimed, "this is the first time a truck has graced the platform."
