Reader Mike Croftcheck killed two birds with one e-mail. He was responding to a letter from another reader and submitted his '78 Silverado for a Classic Cruiser. We'll let him tell his story.
"My name is Mike Croftcheck of Creston, Ohio, and I am writing in response to a Postage Paid letter I read in the February 2008 issue of CLASSIC TRUCKS. Ron Hanisco had written in about not seeing many '73-87 trucks in your magazine, and your response was that you have not seen many in a style befitting CLASSIC TRUCKS. I have to agree with you, but I feel I may have one that fits your needs.
"My '78 Chevy Silverado was purchased six years ago and has been a work in progress the entire time. My father, son, and I would set out each winter to do something new to the truck, then we would cruise it all spring and summer. The first year we did the paint, Crimson Red and white. The next winter we did the stance. We dropped the front with a 2 1/2-inch dropped spindle and a 2-inch drop spring. The rear has a shackle and hanger set that dropped the back end 4 inches. Of course, after getting the stance I was looking for, I had to put on some Centerline rims and BFGoodrich tires.
"I cruised the truck like this a couple years, saving up money to redo my interior, and found a young Amish man who did exceptional work at a reasonable price. Finally, the last piece to the puzzle was the heart of it all. I had to rebuild the motor and give it kick with roller rockers, a mild COMP Cam, Hedman headers, and plenty of chrome, plus many trips to Summit Racing. I'm ready to say I'm satisfied-for now."
