Ed Canaday went out on a limb and came back with an apple. He took a truck that is rarely considered for a build and made a statement that will surely change everyone's opinion of this unlikely brand. It took nearly two years of spare time to build this '47 International Harvester KB1. When he got down and dirty with the truck, things weren't that bad. Lucky for him, the truck was fairly complete and original; someone had even taken off the front clip and put it in storage about 25 years ago, so it was real straight and rust free. Ed tackled as much of the build that he was comfortable with, and enlisted capable help for the rest. While at the Spring Nationals in Oklahoma City, Ed met Randy and Kevin Whitesides. They own and operate Hinshaw Brothers Paint and Body Shop in Columbia, Missouri, and after a good long chat, they agreed to install one of their Mustang II-based frontends on the '47. To let you in on what kind of a guy Ed is, after he read the "Independent Thinking" article in the Mar. '03 issue of CLASSIC TRUCKS, he wanted to install one of Flat Out Engineering's Vette IRS kits in the truck. After he found an '86 Corvette donor car and completed the chassis, he hauled it from his home in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, back to Missouri to have Randy and Kevin finish the body and paintwork. The '47 has now been on the road since September 2004, and has had people scratchin' their heads as they turn 'em. Take Ed's keen eye as a good lesson in finding a diamond in the rough, and not being afraid to venture off the beaten path.
