Goodguys Car Show - Doin' It In Des Moines
While hunting for some shade myself, I found Steve Gantz's sharp '72 Cheyenne Super C-10 tucked around the side of a building. The stock small-block-powered Chevy looked to be in all-original shape, which is rare for the area, since you often see rusted-out new cars on the road in the Midwest. | It's a long drive from Australia, but this rare '38 Ford Ute made it over here somehow along with its owner, Alan Stewart. Next to the current Australian tags in the window was a participant sticker for the '07 Rod & Custom Americruise that happened the month prior, so the 347/C-4 Ford combo must have held together and is still sending Alan cruising around this beautiful country of ours. | Jeff Schwierman from Sharpsville, IN, is cleaning up this year as far as awards go, and we couldn't help but throw another on top of the heap! Jeff's '53 F-100 is an '07 finalist for the Goodguys Truck of the Year-Late. Built at Gordon Riley's Rod Shop in Koko, IN, it is about as clean as they come, and to the delight of Blue Oval fans, there's a 351 and a C-6 between the much-massaged fenders. The burgundy and champagne PPG two-tone paint meld with the beautiful leather Paul Atkins interior. Nice work! | Bob Greening decided he needed something else to do besides all his other projects, so he built this '48 Chevy Loadmaster cab-over. Bob scaled down the hulk of a truck somewhat at his place in Kasson, MN, and added another set of doors in suicide fashion, a seat between 'em, and built a pickup box for the now-crew cab. The '48 obtained its low-flying stance thanks to a full Air Ride system, and the beast is now motorvated by a 454 and Turbo 400 combo. | Since '68 Alan and Julie Snyder have owned their '56 Chevy Cameo, which was bought new by a funeral home to haul flowers. Eight years ago they had Bright Built Hot Rods in Salina, KS, freshen up their old truck in resto-rod fashion by adding a Street & Performance drivetrain from a '00 Trans Am as well as a Vintage Air system to the stock-looking Chevy. The Snyders love driving their Cameo so much now and would never go back to the old stock six-cylinder. | There were quite a few nice early-model pickups in Des Moines, but the way the Candy Apple Red paint on Jack Reiter's '32 Ford grabbed us, we knew he deserved a Finest Five! The chopped Deuce still had a Flathead in it, but an 8BA model dressed with Offy heads and tri-power sits nicely under the hood top. Chrome hairpins and a dropped axle add to the truck's traditional style as well as the whitewalls and exhaust dump tubes under the front fenders. Looks like fun, Jack! | Last but not least, we have Troy Wiens' '51 Chevy Suburban. Troy had recently bought the 'Burb and has been working on getting the bugs out of it, which included the trip to Des Moines from McPheron, KS. The '51 was restored and features many rare stock and early '50s aftermarket accessories, like the stainless fender trim, clamshell rear doors, original AM radio, optional bumper guard, Artillery wheels, and, of course, the Allstate window swamp cooler, just to name a few. As much fun as it is to see hot rod trucks, it's always refreshing to see a stocker. Congratulations, Troy! | Rob and Martha Boardman along with Ron Kester brought their '54 Ford F-100, which we gave a Top Ten award to last year at the Lone Star Nationals. The Sapphire Blue Effie is powered by a "Mr. Mod Motor" himself Sean Hyland Motorsport Ford 4.6 DOHC motor that'll blind you if you're not careful! | Big trucks were in abundance at this year's Goodguys show, and Lloyd Fulks from Lawrence, KS, was there to prove it with his '46 Chevy COE. The red hauler sports a visor, diamond-plate running boards, a tonneau cover, and chrome wheels. |
