Goodguys Great Lakes Nationals - Winning In Waukesha
Classic Trucks Top Ten | I had to do it, and we might as well get it out of the way. I know Econolines can be a sore subject for some, but I love 'em, and you can't dispute their fun factor. Dan Kelly from Brookfield, WI, couldn't either when he bought his '65 Econoline, and he pushed the issue that much further by adding a Holman Moody logo on the sides since they actually used Econolines for shop vehicles. The stock six and three-on-the-tree still reside under the doghouse, while the big 'n' littles leave you wondering. | Hiram Miller has owned this Second Series '55 Chevy truck for 18 years, and between him and his sons, they have transformed it into a winner. Under the salmon-red paint we found an LT-1, a 4L60E, Air Ride, a Mustang II IFS, and a Vintage Air unit. Nice work, guys! | This was definitely Studebaker country, and Mike Kluth and his daughter were at the show with their '37 Studebaker J5 Coupe Express. These almost-custom or coach-built-looking trucks were way ahead of their time, yet they're built on Studebaker's four-door Dictator Sedan chassis and cowl. Mike restored the '37 in his Waukesha, WI, garage, and loves driving it all over the state. There's a full feature coming on this one, too. | Jim Talaga's '34 Ford might look like a rat rod at first, but don't be fooled, it's all hot rod! Under the faux finish is a well-built pickup that sports a built '53 Ford Flathead backed by a '48 Ford trans, a dropped axle, exhaust cutouts, red tuck 'n' roll, and '53 Cadillac wire wheels. Jim and his wife drove the '34 from Plainfield, IL, for the show. | There were a few cool '40s in Waukesha, but Dennis Burkart's Hugger Orange and Lexus Vanilla Shake two-tone Ford was awful easy on the eyes. There's a Heidt's Mustang II under those fenders that helps the 350/350-powered truck on the road, and Dennis rides comfortably in the Shell Ultra Leather cover seat. Yes, there's a feature coming on this one, too. | A '35 Dodge truck? Have we gone off the deep end? Thanks to Henry Bargenquast and his tasteful prewar pickup, we can maintain our sanity while we hand over his Top Ten. He's had the '35 on the road for over 25 years thanks to his efforts building it the first time around with a small-block Chevy, a TH400 for power, and an undisclosed IFS up front. Keep that speedo going, Henry. | One of the cleanest trucks at the show had to be Jeff Kuhn's '48 Chevy. Even under soon-to-be rain clouds, the truck's brilliant fine metallic silver paint popped. The interior is one of the most amazing red leather creations ever, while the engine bay is every bit as impressive with a detailed and injected 572 big-block nestled in tight. Stay tuned on this one! | A Cadillac-powered longbed '72 C-10! Loren Iwen from Oneida, WI, got this truck from his grandpa, who bought it new and used it on his farm until Loren put it on the street for good. The dare-to-be-different, clean green Chevy has a 500-inch Caddy motor hooked to a TH400 that boils the hides on the chromed five-spokes without thinking twice. | Gray doesn't usually jump out and grab you, so it must have been the whole package with Steve Huntington's '53 F-100 that made it stand out from the crowd. The just-right rake and the American Racing Salt Flat wheels say the Effie means business, while the '76 Chevy truck blue on the roof ties the rest of it together. Steve spent many hours out in the garage until 2 a.m. building the 289 and C4-powered F-100, and he was delighted to be picked for a Top Ten and a feature. Nice work. | Don and Sue Snyder from Janesville, WI, have logged more than 60,000 miles on their '48 Chevy since it's been on the road, but you'd never know it looking at it. The bright red paint still looks like new, and the LT-1 and 700-R4 run like a top. Elsewhere, we found full Air Ride, a power bed cover, A/C, cruise, and a supple leather interior. | |
