Driver’s Seat

One of the best things about this line of work, and the whole performance automotive hobby in general, are all the great people I get to meet as I travel all over the country attending events, industry gatherings, and photo shoots. Over nearly 18 years I’ve been honored to meet and become friends with countless folks all over the country as well. Sometimes these friends and acquaintances turn the tables and swing by our offices for a change.

In fact, it was just about a week ago (as I sit writing this editorial) that our friend Corky Coker (of Coker Tire fame) stopped by to say hey to all his magazine pals here in our Irvine, California, offices. It was a great surprise as we seldom get a chance for more than a fleeting conversation as busy a guy as Corky is. As we hung out in the SIM Tech Center stuffing our faces (we always manage to work a good meal into any of our social gatherings – especially when the boss is picking up the tab) and bench racing Corky let us all in on a piece of inside news. It seems as though Corky has teamed up with the folks at Brentwood Communications International and the Travel Channel to star in a neat new show called Backroad Gold that’ll be debuting on the Travel Channel within days of this issue hitting the newsstand!

“Backroad Gold” will follow Corky as he scours the highways, back roads, and small towns of America, wheeling and dealing for hidden riches like antique cars, hot rods, motorcycles, trucks, gas pumps, road signs, and just about every other item having to do with the automotive world. This kind of thing is Corky’s life-long passion – he’s constantly on the road hunting for the next big find. Together with his expert team of restorers, which includes his father, Harold, son-in-law, Greg, daughter, Casey, and head wrench, Hal, Corky buys, restores, and sells all finds from his shop, Honest Charley Speed Shop, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

This is going to be a great show and I can’t wait for the series to start, so tune in to the Travel Channel for info on exact showing days and times cuz I know you’ll enjoy the show as much as I will. Just do me a favor – don’t let Corky know I let the cat outta the bag. He should know by now that I can’t hold a secret.

“Backroad Gold” is produced by Brentwood Communications International, Inc. for Travel Channel.
